Presentation Abstracts

SQL Optimization & Access Paths: What’s Old & New

Some things with SQL optimization have been the same for a long time. Others change are changing rapidly with the introduction of Version 8 and 9. This presentation reviews the basics of access path analysis with extended discussion of what’s new in the latest releases of DB2. The appropriate place for Visual Explain and Optimization Service Center will also be covered. Let’s talk about what’s old, what’s new and how to make the optimizer work for you.

Topics Include:

    • Access path review

    • The difference between “what” and “why”

    • What’s new in V8

    • What’s new in V9

    • Visual Explain & Optimization Service Center

Exploring IBM® Downloadable No-charge Features for Databases

IBM provides the DB2® family and Informix® Dynamic Server customers with several downloadable products at no-charge. The purpose of these “no-charge” database features is to improve the productivity of database administrators and accelerate application development. During these very difficult economic conditions and strained resources, employee productivity is of more importance than ever. Therefore, to improve productivity and learn about available tools, this presentation will explore the following IBM® no-charge database features of: IBM Data Studio, IBM Data Server Client, Optimization Service Center and the IBM .Net Add-Ins. These features provide many abilities such as; supporting Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), create database objects, compare table objects, create SQL and help in problem identification. This presentation will focus the following IBM databases: DB2 for Linux, UNIX and Windows, and DB2 for z/OS. The ultimate goal if the presentation is to improve productivity and show how easy it is to work the IBM family of databases, review new features and help with database migration planning.

Agenda

    • Review the simplification of workstation connections to DB2 z/OS using IBM Data Studio

    • Review abilities to create and alter: tables, views, triggers and indices

    • Demonstrate table object comparison and table drop impact analysis

    • Explore the DB2 z/OS dynamic statement cache for opportunities to improve SQL and save CPU cycles

    • Demonstrate SQL query building and the new Visual Explain feature

    • See how to create web services from DB2 stored procedures

    • Demonstrate exposing DB2 stored procedures as a web services

    • Demonstration of DB2 SQL stored procedure creation and debugging

    • Review support for XML data
