Program Details
DB2 & Java for Dummies -- John Mallonee (Highmark)
Even though the language has been around for a while now, not everyone has had a chance to get experience with Java. This presentation will try to demystify some of the basic terminology and concepts of Java, and how it works with DB2, including connectivity to the mainframe, security, and management issues.Dynamics of Monitoring and Managing Dynamic SQL -- Ed Woods (IBM)
Dynamic SQL poses unique and increasingly more important DB2 performance management challenges. Application components such as WebSphere may make extensive use of dynamic SQL. Dynamic SQL offers important application capabilities, but these capabilities may come at a cost. These costs potentially impact the applications, and the DB2 subsystem as a whole. This presentation will cover the dynamics of how dynamic SQL functions. This presentation will discuss how to measure and understand the impact of dynamic SQL on the DB2 subsystem. Topics will include available trace information. The goal is to develop some recommendations on how to best monitor, assess, quantify, and manage dynamic SQL.DB2® z/OS V8 and System z9 zIIP Processors -- Paul Wirth (IBM)
IBM® is extending its mainframe capabilities to deliver advanced IT resources—servers, software, storage and networking technologies—working in unison to support your business. The System z9 introduces a new specialty engine for data serving call “System z Information Integration Processor”, or zIIP. The purpose of the zIIP specialty engine is to improve the System z9 Total Cost of Owner ship by reducing processor cost, reducing total Measured Service Units (MSUs) and address software cost for an enterprise. DB2 z/Os V8 is the first product to exploit the zIIP feature. DB2 can use the zIIP in distributed processing, business intelligence and DB2 utilities. The purpose of the presentation is to provide an overview on DB2 zIIP exploitation and requirements.DB2/CICS Thread Management -- Pat Townsend (Computer Consultants Corp.)
Review the elements that influence DB2 thread management in a CICS environment. The flow of thread creation and teardown will be explored. DB2 thread management is controlled through various settings within the in CICS system. These settings manage individual threads by types and use by various CICS transactions. After an understanding of thread management, the factors that influence when DB2 threads are created, reused, and destroyed within the CICS system will be evaluated. We will review how the thread variables in CICS control thread management by examining various thread reuse scenarios.
Solutions for the Enterprise - DB2 Compliance to Security Mandates and Industry Initiatives -- Ulf T. Mattsson (Protegrity)
Your company's data is one of its most precious resources, and it's facing threats from all sides. Do you know how to protect it? Companies are spending millions to secure their information, but the incidence of network intrusions that result in compromised data is on the rise. What are they doing wrong? In many industries encryption is a growing requirement to satisfy the need for data security. In some industries, government regulations, such as the SB 1386, PCI DSS and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, might actually impose a security requirement that is best met by encrypting data. A common misconception about DB2 and security concerns the value of encryption versus the traditional methods that DB2 uses to keep data secure from unauthorized usage.
PureXML™ Primer for DB2® 9 for z/OS -- Paul Wirth (IBM)
With the recent General Availability of DB2 9 for z/OS, DB2 9 extends traditional DB2 strengths in many areas like online schema evolution, Unicode, XML, DB2 family SQL, utilities, security, compliance, and 64-bit virtual storage. DB2 9 is optimized for Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) and one key DB2 9 feature to support SOA is pureXML™. pureXML™ is designed for seamless and efficient integration of XML and relational data in DB2 9. DB2 9 is a now a hybrid data server providing support for both relational and pureXML™ storage, with the necessary services to support both data structures. The purpose of this presentation is to explore pureXML™ in DB2 9 for z/OS to gain an understanding of the business value pureXML™ provides and to learn pureXML™ terms, as well as concepts.
